Life and Thought of Karl Barth
Karl Barth (1886-1968) was a Swiss Reformed theologian and pastor who had a major influence on theology and on the church (both in his lifetime and since his death). He played a major role as a leader in the Confessing Church in Germany during the rise and fall of Hitler and the Third Reich, and he was the primary author of the Barmen Declaration (one of ECO’s confessional standards). His impact was not only in Reformed theology but was ecumenically impactful gaining attention and respect of Roman Catholics and Protestants of all varieties. Whether we agree with Barth or disagree with Barth, understanding Barth’s contribution to theology and to the church will help us better navigate the theological landscape that we find ourselves in today. This course will at times be hard work, but by the grace of God, through study steeped in prayer and prayer informed by study, we will proceed and persevere together in the faith that God will use our endeavor to further build us up as mature followers of Jesus Christ who love God with all our mind, soul, strength, and heart and who are further enabled to help others to do likewise.
Please note that this is an upper division seminar course. There will be no video lectures and will instead meet weekly for discussion on the reading. Students must have completed at least two theology classes and a minimum of 15 credits to enroll in the course.
