Pastoral Ministry Intern

It is intended that through this mentorship the intern will be given opportunity to gain experience in all aspects of pastoral ministry. This will include, but not be limited to preaching, worship service leadership, teaching, pastoral care, ministry team development and leadership, and pastoral counseling.

The intern will work with the pastor, staff, and session in furthering the goals of community engagement, assimilation, and discipleship. Opportunity will be present to imagine and initiate new efforts in outreach aligned with the gifting of the intern.

Waitsburg Presbyterian has enjoyed a recent period of growth, but continues to be challenged to see how our congregants and church ministries might better connect with the families of school aged children.

At the retirement of the present pastor, the right candidate may be considered as a candidate for the position of solo pastor.

Mentoring Church Context

What is the mission/vision of the church? How can an intern help the congregation to achieve these?
Our Mission is the Great Commission. Our operational vision statement is two-fold: A heart for every home. A home for every heart.

An intern can help the church realize its mission through: (1) the development and practice of the skills of pastoral ministry previously described and through energetic prayer and initiative in
community outreach personally, and (2) through leadership in church based community outreach initiatives.
What is the make-up of the church and the surrounding community?
The church congregation has grown from an average attendance of 32 in the spring of 2019 to 47 in the winter of 2023. It is a mature congregation by age, with just two families with children. It is a mature congregation by the measure of its commitment to Biblical truth and its heart of service. Alpha has been a significant entry point of newer attendees. Our current Sunday night ministries include an Alpha session, a men’s study, and a women’s study. Combined attendance in January has averaged 30. There are two additional women’s studies through the week with a total attendance of 20. Our deacon ministry is developing, providing congregational care and welcome baskets to those new to the community. Last summer’s VBS, a joint effort with the Waitsburg Christian Church, had an attendance of 50 children.

Waitsburg is a rural community of 1200. (with just a 1000 yet needing to know Christ). It’s economic base has been wheat farming. More recently there has been economic development that has included two new restaurants, a wine and beer bar, and busy coffee shop that frequently hosts a Friday night blue grass jam. Waitsburg is an exburg of Walla Walla, twenty miles away. It has been influence by the wine culture that Walla Walla is known for.
