Pastoral Intern

The Sunday morning worship experience and youth/young adult outreach pastoral intern has plenty of room to grow in reaching our neighbors and speaking to a demographic with little to no prior church experience. Although we can form this position to whoever applies, we would love to see someone develop a rehearsal night that prepares our Sunday morning experience, develop new volunteers, and help to oversee the details of our weekend experience. We would also love for someone to partner with our family minister to reach out to our youth and families Tuesday nights.

Mentoring Church Context

What is the mission/vision of the church? How can an intern help the congregation to achieve these?
Our mission is to love our community one neighbor at a time. We are community focused, involved in the local school in several ways, and focused on ways to invite neighbors into community with us.
What is the make-up of the church and the surrounding community?
Pleasanton is a diverse town with a growing South Asian population. Several Southeast and South Asian families join our events and holidays. We want to continue to creatively reach out to the neighbors who have not yet met Jesus or found a church home.

The Sunday morning worship experience and youth/young adult outreach has plenty of room to grow in reaching our neighbors and speaking to a demographic with little to no prior church experience. Our church has dominant number of retired people, mostly white, who came here to work for a scientific lab or other tech industry.

Most people in the community are well-educated and well-paid. Most people moving into the community are Indian, Chinese, and Korean. Our adjacent town, Livermore, has a highly Mexican population that we do not see represented in our congregation either.
What are your top 2 strengths and growth areas as a church?
This church has a strong heart to embrace our community. No matter the age or stage, these congregants reach out and greet, get curious, release biases, and represent Jesus in their approach to others. The congregation is also very generous with mission, and it is especially excited to bless the younger generations of our community.

I believe we could grow in creativity as we reach out to the neighbors, especially in our worship services and online presence. I continue to pray for our congregation to grow in spiritual maturity as they talk to those who are not like themselves.

Mentor's Information

Primary Mentor's Name
Mary Scott
Primary Mentor's ministry experience, passions, and interests
As a Fuller Seminary grad from the Menlo Park Campus, I have been in ministry in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 15 years. I have worked in three churches in the in the South Bay in youth ministry before becoming ordained in ECO in 2021 and becoming the lead pastor at GraceWay in November of 2022.

I have loved leading this church and sharing in its heart for local mission as we seek to love our neighbors and share Jesus' heart with our community. Although I am now engaged, I have a strong heart for singles in the church as well as those who don't "fit" anywhere. I have worked with many immigrant communities and continue to seek ways to reach out to fringe groups.

I am an avid cyclist, and I love to travel whenever I have the chance. I had a little dog for 12 years and hope to get another in the next couple years. I would love to share the ministry with someone with a heart to move this church in the direction of God's call.
