The History & Practice of the Presbyterian Church

We all need to know where we have come from as it shapes our identity. This new course will trace how the Presbyterian world came to be – from the Reformation in the 16th century through the way Presbyterian faith has emerged in the United States up to the present. We will cover the early theological issues through our Confessions and Catechisms. We will see how Puritanism and Pietism shaped us. Presbyterians were prominent in both the 1st and 2nd Great Awakenings. In the 20th century we were deeply shaped by the Fundamentalist-Modernist controversy. For the last 50 years there have been 3 major splits among Presbyterian, and ECO represents one of those. Who are we? How do we express and practice our faith? The syllabus can be found here.
