The Family of God: Gender, Sex and the Church

The world has gone through rapid transformations in its beliefs and practices surrounding the human body and what should be done with it. Making sense of gender and sexuality is highly challenging, and it is no surprise that the church has generally failed to do much more than offer moral counsel. Morality often offers very simple or even simplistic answers that can do incredible damage to complex people who are living in an ever-changing environment for their bodies to inhabit. Beyond pastoral care, apologetics, or political action, this course works from theological foundations to change the paradigm of how students think about theology, the church and its mission, the world, human bodies, and how they interact. It argues that the Bible is a book about establishing a family or household of God, and that within this household all individuals bring their uniqueness to the body of Christ as service to one another, and that gender and sexuality are part of the bigger picture of how this household relates to one another as it grows into maturity. This family of God’s people are to confront the world as ambassadors who reveal the kingdom of God in the whole physical and social life they live together. Because gender and sexuality are basic to human life and experience of the world, this course takes a broad and integrative approach to investigating the forces that shape how we understand our bodies and what we do with them. This will open new vistas in our understanding of the gospel as we reread the Bible as a book that has much in every way to say about what bodies are for in the body of Christ. And finally, we’ll consider strategies for how to lead churches through these challenging conversations, and how our church communities might reveal the love of Jesus to those confused, harmed, or questioning the goodness of their own bodies or what to do with their desires.
